We are looking for community spirited people who want to make a real difference by ensuring that more people affected by the Windrush issue can receive the help and support they need, especially during these uncertain times.
What is the Windrush issue?
The Windrush issue came to prominence in 2018, it affected long-term residents who could not prove their lawful rights to live and work in the UK. Since then, it has been heavily reported how members of the ‘Windrush generation’ have lost out on jobs, healthcare, housing and other services because they were unable to prove their legal status in the UK, and in some cases had wrongfully faced deportation / detention. As a result, the Home Office is committed to addressing the issue and compensating people affected for the harm caused.
Windrush Community Ambassador role
This is a short-term, voluntary role – approximately 8 weeks. Training and support will be provided and all expenses will be covered up to £800 per person.
Ambassadors will help to promote the Windrush Scheme and the Windrush Compensation Scheme to communities most likely to be affected by this issue which will include: people of Caribbean, Indian, Pakistani, Ghanaian, Bangladeshi and Nigerian origin.
These schemes have been put in place to provide support to affected individuals, to help them to get documentation to prove their immigration status and receive compensation for the impact on their lives.
A Windrush Community Ambassador will be expected to have:
· Good experience of working at a grassroots level with any of the affected communities listed above, across the UK or in the following regions: Greater London, West Midlands, East Midlands, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire.
· Established channels and routes into these communities through organisations, networks, places of worship, media etc.
The role will involve:
· Disseminating campaign materials that will provided, through your networks and other channels e.g. social media, websites/ e-newsletters, WhatsApp groups
· Identifying suitable virtual community meetings/ events to provide information on the schemes or invite a Home Office spokesperson to address the audience
· Taking part in media interviews to help increase awareness and understanding of the schemes
· Providing valuable feedback about how the campaign is being received within the affected communities and what further information is required
· Identifying other ways of how you can raise awareness of the schemes.
We will support you throughout the campaign:
· Before you get started, a virtual training session will take place to provide more information on the schemes and your role as a community ambassador, giving you an opportunity to ask questions
· Following this session a briefing document will be shared detailing your role
· We’ll also help you prepare for any media interviews, for example, written and verbal briefings/ Q&As.
To monitor the progress of activity, we would like:
· Regular check-in sessions to understand and track what has been delivered, engagement levels and feedback from the community
· A final de-brief to ensure all valuable information is captured for evaluation purposes.
